I hope this hasn\'t been mentioned already. But the MCA is involved in.

possibly arranging for the use of VHF radios being chargeable according to HWMBO's latest PBO mag.

So, is there any truth in this. Should we be worried?

What is the collective intellect of the Forum's opinion on this?

Eh? They used to charge but now it is free, have they worked out that they need the money to fix the 'new' system?

They made the licence free so those that did not have one would register....now once all those licence dodgers have registered they are going to start charging again......only my view but the reason I never bothered registering!!!!

the government want to make more from licencing the radio waves, therefore the high level proposal is to review the usage with a view to charging.

they may struggle with the safetly issues but they will no doubt find a way.............

Have read the article in PBO.

The way I read this OFCOM (a government agency) plans to charge the MCA (another government agency) for use of the radio spectrum.

The left hand plans to charge the right hand. The right hand then expects us to pay for it /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Given that it's in consultative stage at the moment, I've no opinion either way. The document is far more about sharing of radio frequencies, and allowing current owners of radio spectrum to benefit from payment for sharing or selling frequencies, than charging marine vhf users.

Has anyone else read the full document? I can guess by responses those who have read at least the applicable parts.

Yes - bit of a saddo, but I too have read it!

Classic example of govt department power play / empire building. It will appeal to the Treasury and on that basis is likely to go through. Some of it makes sense (for example re-allocating all those "public correspondence" vhf channels that arent used any more) but charging the MCA for channel 16 is ridiculous. Apart from anything else, it is allocated by international agreement and cant just be re-allocated by Ofcom.

Am I the only one who is fed up of being charged twice by the govt - once through taxes and then again through licenses? Whatever happened to the idea off minimum govt at minimum cost?
